Project:
Power Generation Facility
Client: Tenaska
Location: Kiowa, OK
Construction Period: 2001–2003
In 2003, Zachry completed work on the Kiamichi Energy
Facility, located on the plains of Pittsburgh County
near Kiowa, Oklahoma. The 1,220 Mw, combined-cycle,
natural gas–fueled facility has four combustion
turbines, four heat recovery steam generators and two
steam turbines.
Zachry teamed with Black & Veatch to complete the
EPC scope of work for the facility. Zachry performed
all site procurement, construction and startup support,
and Black & Veatch performed engineering, major
equipment procurement and startup services. Zachry’s
industrial construction scope included all civil, structural,
mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and
insulation work.
In order to meet the aggressive 22-month construction
schedule, the seasoned engineering-construction team,
which had worked together on several projects, accelerated
the delivery of all major equipment deliveries and executed
work activities from an integrated EPC schedule similar
to manufacturing’s just-in-time-delivery. Despite
heavy snow and extreme cold, the project was completed
ahead of schedule.
Staffing the project was also a challenge because of
the project’s relatively remote location. The
workforce peaked at more than 900. On completion, the
Kiamichi Energy Center was Tenaska’s largest facility,
supplying power to more than a million homes.
