Zachry Begins Its First Design/ Build
Transportation Project
December
2004
(Austin, Texas) - ZCC has begun
the company’s first ever design/build transportation
project. The $154.3 million job covers 7.5 miles of State
Highway 45SE, from Interstate Highway 35 to the State Highway
130 and U.S. Highway 183 junction.
The Comprehensive Development
Agreement (CDA) for the development, design and construction
of SH 45SE is only the second such contract ever issued by
the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Zachry’s
use of the design/ build approach is expected to result in
fewer modifications once the project is underway.
The job is part of the 122-
mile Central Texas Turnpike Project (CTTP), and will be a
four-lane toll road with a 100-foot-wide median. In addition
to designing and building the highway, Zachry will be responsible
for acquiring the necessary right-of-way on TxDOT’s
behalf; relocating existing utilities impacted by the project;
securing permitting; and performing geotechnical investigations.
“On traditional bid/build
projects, contractors frequently suggest revisions to the
original plans,” said Heavy Division Operations Manager
Greg McVey. “We’re excited to participate in a
design/build project because, with the engineers and the constructors
both involved throughout the process, we’re confident
there will be fewer changes along the way. That should result
in a greater value to TxDOT and the taxpayers.”
Zachry will self-perform earthwork,
land clearing, drainage work, and road and bridge construction,
as well as concrete paving. Signage installation, toll plaza
construction, electrical work, barrier rail installation and
asphalt paving will be subcontracted.
