Chinese Cranes Disembark at Bayport Channel
July 2006
(Pasadena, Texas) - The ZCC team staffing the Bayport Terminal Complex project welcomed four enormous gantry cranes on May 15 from Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co., Ltd., a worldfamous crane and steel structure manufacturer in China. The cranes will become a permanent part of a new wharf and will be used to load and unload cargo containers from docked ships.
“The project team has worked hard to get enough of the wharf built for the specific purpose of offloading these cranes,” said Project Manager John Glasgow. “This is an important milestone for the project and is a huge event for the local community.”
In preparation for the arrival of the gantry cranes, ZCC turned over to the Port of Houston Authority five acres of concrete-paved area within the container yard at the end of March. The designated acreage is being used as a staging area for the cranes until Konecranes, a specialty crane corporation working with the Port of Houston, erects the four gantry cranes. The new gantry cranes are rubber tired, which allows them to travel freely around the container yard stacking containers or loading them on to semi trucks for distribution throughout the country.
The $96-million contract, phase 1A of the Port of Houston’s overall project, consists of a wharf that will span 2,000 linear feet into the water and a container yard that will boast 60 acres of concrete paving to be used for container storage, gantry cranes, cargo transport roads and a holding area for wheeled trailers.
