Loop
410 Expansion Project Nears Completion
June
2004
(San Antonio, Texas) – ZCC is
just months away from completing the Loop 410 expansion
project, a multi-million-dollar project that is expanding
the highway from three to five lanes in both directions.
The project, which began in April 2001, also calls for
the demolition and reconstruction of overpasses in a
1.5-mile span west of Jackson Keller Road to the east
of Blanco Road, in north central San Antonio.
Comprised of separate contracts for
two adjacent stretches that connect just east of Honeysuckle
Road, Zachry’s work has included typical dirt,
concrete, embankment, signal, signage and landscape
work, in addition to substantial drainage improvements.
Project manager Craig Patterson’s
Loop 410 team has been dealt its fair share of challenges
since the project began, including record-breaking floods.
The Honeysuckle portion of the project was especially
impacted by unusually wet weather. In July 2002, more
than eight inches of rain fell in a 90-minute period,
and wreaked havoc on the roadway and the adjacent Olmos
Creek.
The resulting floodwaters destroyed
the westbound Loop 410 frontage road intersection with
West Avenue, and washed out a box culvert on the eastbound
frontage road, leaving a yawning 20-square-foot hole.
Crews mobilized immediately to repair the damage.
“The most satisfying part of
working on this project has been challenging our people
and then seeing the results of their hard work,”
said Patterson. All in all, Patterson is pleased with
the way the Loop 410 work has progressed.
“The brightest part of any project
is watching people take on new challenges and meet those
challenges,” said Patterson.
