BVZ
Completes Construction on Cutting Edge Arizona Power
Plant
June
2004
(Tonopah, Arizona) – The BVZ
team at Sempra Energy Resource’s 1,250 Mw, $500
million Mesquite Generating Station celebrated the plant’s
turnover during a dedication ceremony attended by more
than 200 employees, subcontractors, customer representatives
and local dignitaries.
The last six months of the two-year
project were spent completing and commissioning the
second power block, while the first power block was
already in operation. Power Block One was turned over
to Sempra in May 2003, and Power Block Two was turned
over in December 2003.
The twin, two-on-one, combined-cycle
power blocks, built by BVZ Power Partners, ran continuously
through February, and operated 45 percent more efficiently
than a typical natural gas-fueled, simple-cycle plant.
In 2002, Zachry’s Plant Civil
Services constructed two of the largest evaporation
ponds they had ever built. The 70-acre ponds process
the massive amount of water used to generate the plant’s
electricity, and required the excavation of more than
1.3 million cubic yards of dirt.
The Mesquite project received ZCC
Power Division’s “Best of the Best”
award for its excellent 2002 safety record, and was
ranked first among Arizona projects in Southwest
Constructor Magazine.
