ZCC
to Expand U.S. Highway 77
June
2003
(San Benito, Texas) – Zachry
Construction broke ground on a new project that will
ease increasing international truck traffic on U.S.
Highway 77. The $68 million project calls for expanded
roadway that will eventually become part of the NAFTA
Superhighway --a planned 1,600-mile interstate connecting
Mexico to Canada.
Zachry is responsible for widening the existing
four-lane freeway to six lanes between SH 345 and the Business
77 interchange in San Benito. Zachry will also construct new
bridges, approaches, frontage roads, drainage improvements
and retaining walls. These upgrades will also improve the
highway's ability to handle increased traffic flow during
hurricane evacuations.
Zachry plans to complete work in 2006 --several
months earlier than required by TxDOT.
