Texas A&M University Civil Engineering Department Renamed in Honor of Zachry

May 2006

(College Station, Texas) - The Zachry name now graces the civil engineering department at Texas A&M University. The Zachry Department of Civil Engineering recognizes a generous gift commitment from the Zachry Foundation in 2005 to Texas A&M’s One Spirit One Vision Campaign. Three generations of Zachrys have been civil engineering graduates of Texas A&M.

In October 2005, a campus ceremony was held to formally announce the department’s new name and to recognize H.B. “Bartell” Zachry Jr. and his wife, Mollie, who represented the Zachry family, foundation and companies.

The late H.B. “Pat” Zachry Sr., a Texas A&M Class of 1922 civil engineering graduate, served his alma mater in leadership roles including chairman of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. Zachry Engineering Center on the A&M campus was named for him in 1972.

The Zachrys’ recent gift for civil engineering will provide endowments for faculty chairs and professorships, student scholarships and fellowships, as well as the department’s excellence fund, surveying camp and student advising services. The gift also will provide a challenge fund to match qualifying gifts to the department and encourage additional investment from other donors.

Bartell Zachry, a Class of 1954 graduate, is a current member and past chairman of the A&M President’s Board of Visitors and has served on the President’s Advisory Council, the Department of Civil Engineering’s advisory committee and the Board of Advisors of the Texas Engineering Extension Service. He was inducted into the Corps Hall of Honor in 2001, making him and his father, Pat Zachry, the first father and son ever inducted. Bartell was named a Texas A&M Distinguished Alumnus in 1997 and a Distinguished Graduate of the Civil Engineering Department in 2000. He received Texas A&M Engineering’s Outstanding Alumni Honor Award in 2005.

“As a recognized leader in the construction industry, Bartell Zachry has brought significant recognition to his alma mater,” said Dr. G. Kemble Bennett, vice chancellor and dean of engineering. “His support of Texas A&M and the engineering program runs deep, and he truly serves as an outstanding role model for our students,” Bennett said.
