ZCC
to Widen Spur 66 in San Antonio
March
2004
(San Antonio, Texas) – Zachry
ended 2003 with a Spur 66 groundbreaking, heralding
what will soon be the main entrance to the new $750
million Toyota truck plant on San Antonio’s South
Side. The ZCC team will widen an almost two-mile stretch
of Watson Road – an existing 20-foot wide county
road that runs from Alamo Dragway outside Loop 410 –
into a 57-foot-wide divided highway.
The scope of the $7.5 million Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDOT) contract will consist
primarily of 83,000 cubic yards of excavation and 52,000
cubic yards of embankment. The team will cement-stabilize
the entire embankment with 1,800 tons of cement before
covering it with 95,750 tons of asphalt.
The intersections of State Highway
16 and Spur 66, and Applewhite Road and Spur 66, which
will feed into the Toyota plant, will be paved with
6,300 cubic yards of concrete. The crew will also be
responsible for installing a 16-inch waterline and six-inch
gas line stretching the entire 1.78-mile length of Spur
66, as well as constructing a five-by-two-foot box culvert
at its intersection with SH 16. Three additional culvert
structures will go underneath several private driveways
providing landowner access. One last box culvert will
be constructed to provide drainage at a shallow creek
running through the middle of the spur road.
