Zachry Recognized with Six Industry Awards
March

(San Antonio, Texas) - Texas
Construction magazine recently named Zachry’s work for
Calpine at the Shell Deer Park Energy Center as one of Texas’
top two construction projects completed in 2004. An independent
panel reviewed 90 projects submitted by 46 firms throughout
the state. The panel selected the Calpine project as one
of two projects given the Judges’ Award for most outstanding
entry. Nominees in the eighth annual contest were scored on
construction and design innovation, solutions to challenges,
project management, client service and safety.
Additionally, the first two
Zachry projects ever submitted for consideration for the Associated
Builders and Contractors (ABC) Excellence in Construction
Awards have both received regional recognition —a high
achievement in the construction industry. Zachry’s construction
of the new Student Services and Administration Building at
the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio
(UTHSCSA) and renovation of the existing office building (EOB)
at the corporate headquarters received Excellence in Construction
awards from the South Texas chapter of
ABC.
“Both projects presented
significant challenges. The renovation of the Zachry office
building was a particularly extraordinary effort,” said
Charlie Winget, ZCC’s business development manager for
the Commercial Building Division.
“With an older building
like that, it would have been easier to level it and build
an entirely new structure. The vision, however, was to maintain
original architectural features and the general historical
ambience, so great pains were taken to modernize the location’s
amenities and preserve its character.”
The renovation of the EOB took
more than a year and a half to complete after the project
began in August 2002.
