Completes Construction of
Power-Generating Evaporation Ponds
February
2003
(Tonopah, Fla.)–Zachry's Plant
Civil Services (PCS) has completed construction of two
evaporation ponds at Sempra Energy Resources' Mesquite
Power Generating Station, in Arizona's southwestern
desert. Work began on the evaporation ponds in June
2002. The ponds process large amounts of water to generate
the power plant's electricity.
At about 70 acres each, the ponds
are two of the largest that PCS has ever built. During
construction of the east pond, PCS excavated about 700,000
cubic yards of dirt and compacted 340,000 cubic yards
of embankment. The west pond required the excavation
of 600,000 cubic yards of dirt, the compacting of 190,000
cubic yards of embankment and the relocation of 70,000
cubic yards of dirt.
Once completed, the Mesquite Power
Generating Station will be one of the nation's cleanest
and most efficient natural gas-fueled power plants.
The 1,250-Mw facility will be 45 percent more efficient
than a typical natural gas-fueled power plant and will
feature the latest in air emissions control technology.
The plant will generate enough electricity to power
350,000 homes.
